Yale University – a private Ivy League university – was founded in 1701. It is the fourth oldest institution of higher education in the United States after Harvard, The College of William and Mary, and St. John’s College. The university is named after the school’s first largest private benefactor – Elihu Yale.
The university consists of 15 schools: Yale College, Yale School of Medicine, Yale Divinity School, Yale Law School, Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Sheffield Scientific School, Yale School of Fine Arts, Yale School of Music, Yale School of the Environment, Yale School of Public Health, Yale School of Architecture, Yale School of Nursing, Yale School of Drama, Yale School of Management, and Jackson School of Global Affairs.
Campus
Yale is situated in New Haven covering an area of 260 acres (1.1 km2). A second building in western New Haven covers 500 acres (2 km2). Yale has many other buildings in other areas and also owns seven forests Connecticut, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Clearly, the university helps preserve nature through its efforts. The Yale Campus was listed as the one of the most beautiful in the United States by Travel + Leisure in 2011.
Yale Library
Yale University Library is the third largest collection of books in the United States holding over 15 million volumes (and increasing). The major libraries are Sterling Memorial Library, Beinecke Rare Book Library, Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library, and Lewis Walpole Library.

The University has been ranked among the top 10 over the decade by USnews.com. According to the 2021 rankings Yale has been ranked 4th by USnews, 8th by THE World University Ranking, 17th by QS World, and 11th by Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). Athletics
Yale is a part of the Ivy League Conference and participates in 35 varsity athletic games. The University is also a NCAA Division Level 1 university. However, just as the other Ivy League members, Yale does not offer athletic scholarships. The school’s mascot is Handsome Dan – the Yale Bulldog. It is also the first college mascot in America.
